About 1Sky New Mexico
Introduction
1Sky is an effort to galvanize a more powerful climate movement. It is not a new institution or even a coalition. Its purpose is to communicate a positive vision and a clear, simple set of goals and policy initiatives that are commensurate with the scale of the climate challenge, and to build the necessary power to solve global warming and put America on a new path for energy.
1Sky New Mexico is a project of New Energy Economy and is intended to aggregate the power of those concerned about climate and energy. Learn More About our Team Here >>
Scientific Context
The Arctic ice cap is melting much faster than expected and is now about 30 years ahead of predictions made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change - all summer ice at the Arctic may disappear within a mere 13 years. At the same time large areas of Antarctica are melting, the Siberian permafrost is thawing, and we are seeing widespread variability in the climate throughout the world. We may soon be beyond the point of no return – beyond the point of avoiding catastrophic changes that will displace hundreds of millions of people and literally pose a threat to all ecosystems and life on the planet.
Need for this Campaign
Americans seem ready to respond to the challenge, yet bold and cohesive leadership is missing. Our nation needs to be on something akin to war footing with a society-wide mobilization to immediately halt and reduce carbon emissions. We must lead by example and then rapidly negotiate climate protection agreements with China, India and other nations. The 1Sky campaign will provide a unified set of clear proposals for action that are commensurate with the scale and urgency of the global warming challenge.
Opportunity
New Mexico is now in a unique position to advance global warming policy in the
United States. The state is the first with an economy based heavily on the fossil fuel industry to address global warming, and New Mexico Senators Pete Domenici and Jeff Bingaman are shaping federal policy as the ranking members of the Senate Energy Committee.
In Washington DC, there are many politically popular energy and climate plans competing for attention. Yet despite substantial progress, we do not yet have a package of policy solutions with the elements necessary to transform our society quickly enough to prevent dangerous climate change.

Houston-based Tecton Energy plans to conduct oil and gas drilling on 65,000 acres in the Galisteo Basin and 50,000 acres on Albuquerque's West Mesa.
