There is a strong and growing focus on wind energy as part of the solution to America’s energy needs with over 9,150 MW of installed wind power plant generation in the U.S. as of January, 2006 and expectations of 15, 000 MW by 2008. New Mexico is ranked sixth in the U.S. in terms of windfarm installations
and has over 400 MW installed capacity statewide, and another 300 MW was installed by the end of 2007.
The North American Wind and Research Training Center is a public-private partnership located at Mesalands Community College in Tucumcari, New Mexico. The NAWRTC is a workforce development and training project, a distributed generation wind energy project, and an educational project all wrapped in one.
Developing our wind energy resources will be a great boon to rural and ranching communities in New Mexico.
In April there will be a leading-edge conference, Renew New Mexico 2008, on renewable energy development. Participants will learn about the latest technology at tradeshow booths; hear preeminent speakers on the development of wind, solar and biomass energy and network with experts from utilities, government and the private sector at this premiere event.
The goal of the conference is to information about renewable energy in New Mexico. It will offer insight to the evolving energy market and present growth strategies to entrepreneurs, landowners, farmers, ranchers, dairymen, counties, municipalities, schools and all other interested parties.

Houston-based Tecton Energy plans to conduct oil and gas drilling on 65,000 acres in the Galisteo Basin and 50,000 acres on Albuquerque's West Mesa.
